“New Human Rights Ethics: Impact on International Business” (1 Hour)
Presenter: Karla Pascarella, Partner, Peckar & Abramson
Primary topics include international human rights – how they may affect practitioners and their clients, complications across many different industry sectors, and the impact on Texas businesses. We will cover how an uncertain human rights record, or the mere failure to address human rights, may expose a client to litigation, and financial, reputational, and criminal risk, and ways for businesses to mitigate exposure to potential issues, including developing ethics and related internal guidelines that address human rights. We will also briefly cover the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, the UK Modern Slavery Act, California’s Transparency and Supply Chains Act of 2010, the Dodd-Frank Act, the French Law of Vigilance, the Swiss Responsible Business Initiative, and the Canadian Ombudsperson for Responsible Enterprise as they apply to businesses, both domestically and internationally, and the subsequent effects these laws have on all industries.
